What you can do - WHILE TRAVELLING

Author: Nick Long, YourTomorrow Team
Unless action is taken to cut road spending and invest more in public transport, transport will be the biggest CO2 contributor in the next ten years. So here's how you can help. Start with a few of the easy items listed at the beginning, and work up from there:
- Walk, cycle or use public transport rather than a car whenever possible - it's good for the environment and healthier for you! A double decker bus carries the same number of people as 40 cars.
- Car share whenever possible, especially for daily journeys such as going to work and school runs.
- If you drive to work, try to share your journey with colleagues who live near you or on your route.
- Drive smoothly avoiding unnecessary accelerating and braking, and in the highest gear possible to reduce exhaust emissions.
- Turn off the engine if you are going to be stationary for more than two minutes.
- Drive off as soon as you start the engine - leaving it warming up on the drive creates pollution and mechanical wear.
- Don't carry unnecessary loads - extra weight adds to your fuel consumption.
- Put your gum in the bin. In the UK we spend £150 million every year cleaning chewing gum off the streets.
- Don't travel by air if you can avoid it - air travel uses up large amounts of fossil fuels and creates greenhouse gases.
- If you do travel by air, make a donation to Climate Care based on the length of your flight. This organisation will plant trees to neutralise the carbon dioxide produced on your flight. It also supports the development of renewable and clean energy projects that reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
- Consider joining the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), which provides a national reliable breakdown service and campaigns for a sound and sustainable transport system for Britain.
- When buying a new car make fuel efficiency your first consideration. The Environmental Transport Association (ETA) on 01932 828882 can offer advice on the relative environmental merits of most cars, as can the Vehicle Certification Agency, 0117 951 5151.
- Report dumped rubbish to your council.
