This is a set of six hand-made machine washable coasters, each a different colour (red, black, white, green, blue, yellow) that are made from a traditional sailors knot called, unsurprisingly, the Thump Mat Knot. The knot was used in the old sailing ships to prevent the deck planking being damaged when the turning block through which the sheets (the lines controlling the in and out movement of the sails) pass banged or "thumped" on the deck when the sails slatted in light winds.
Flat enough to rest a light glass on, not only do they look good, they help AIDs victims in South Africa. They make perfectly practical coasters too; the perfect "ethical gift" from Yourtomorrow!
These coasters are made by "Wotknot" which is a small community, in association with the Wentworth AIDS Action Group (WAAG). Wotknot provides employment for the patients to enable them to become financially independent. In addition it gives a percentage of its profits directly to the WAAG to enable the group to set up further skills based projects. The long term aim is that the community should become a buzzing hive of activity with many individuals producing a wide range of products.
